Perspective

By: Emma Sevoian

Self-love is a simple term that encompasses the not so simple ideas of self-esteem, self-confidence, and mental and emotional health. These internal aspects of a human being dictate what happens externally, which directly contributes to how one perceives their quality of life. Self-love serves as a motivational force that pushes individuals to take care of themselves in order to be able to achieve their goals and reach their full potential; therefore, individuals that fall on opposing ends of the self-love/self-hate spectrum live and think of life in very different ways (1).

The individuals that fall closer toward self-hate view themselves in a negative light and focus on the insignificance of their actions. These individuals do not a see the point of taking care of themselves. They feel as though their thoughts and opinions are unimportant and do not impact anyone’s life (2). They do not set goals in fear of not accomplishing them. They dwell on their failures and blame themselves for what has resulted. Their insecurities prevent them from trying new things or challenging themselves.

Those that lean towards self-love find value in themselves and their actions. They take care of themselves physically and mentally. They believe that their opinions and thoughts are valid and worthy of being shared. Every goal they create and accomplish takes them one step closer toward the dream that they have envisioned for themselves — the dream that gives their life purpose. These individuals know that they can overcome obstacles and pick themselves back up if they fail. They are self-assured yet recognize their flaws (2).

Perception is subjective. The self is one aspect that can influence an individual’s unique view of the outside world, specifically their view on how much value their life holds. Therefore, having a healthy or unhealthy mindset about yourself as an individual, your capabilities, and your presence in society affects your perspective on how meaningful your life is.

The individuals that love themselves have a higher self-esteem and a better outlook on life. These are the individuals who find meaning within their own lives, because they see the worth in themselves, in their future, and all that surrounds them even in their fleeting nature.
